Dr. Savolu Sharon Sonia is a distinguished academician and medical educator with over 24 years of teaching experience, currently serving as the Principal,Government Medical College, Anantapuramu, Andhra Pradesh, since 20 th June’2025.She has been working as Professor and Head of the Department (HOD) of Pharmacology at Government Medical College, Anantapuramu,since March 25, 2022. She completed her MBBS and MD in Pharmacology from Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, under Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTR UHS), Vijayawada, and is registered with the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council, Hyderabad (Reg. No. 39714; UG dated 3.5.1997, PG dated 10.10.2001).
She commenced her Government medical service on February 29, 2000, as a Tutor-cum- Postgraduate,at Kurnool Medical College,Kurnool and advanced through academic ranks as Assistant Professor (25.5.2001 – 5.9.2006), Associate Professor (6.9.2006 – 2.3.2011), and Professor (from 3.3.2011 to present), accumulating a total service of 25 years, of which 15 years are as Professor. She has been a Postgraduate (PG) Guide for the past 20 years, and is also a recognized PhD Guide under Dr. NTR UHS.
Dr. Sonia has actively enhanced her academic skills through numerous prestigious training programs, including a training on Economic Basis of Health Care Interventions at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore (23–25 July 2012), basic and orientation programs in MS Office, the Revised Basic Course Workshop (RBCW) and ATCOM Module at Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad (1–4 December 2015), the Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME) at JNMC, Belagavi (2017 batch), and the Training to Teachers (T2T) program organized by Harvard University through Dr. NTR UHS from January 30 to September 15, 2017. She has a total of 18 publications to her credit.
Her contributions extend across both academic and administrative domains. She has held key positions including Member of the Academic Senate and Board of Studies (II MBBS) of Dr. NTR UHS, She has been an EC(Executive Committee) Member of Dr. NTR UHS since March 19, 2021.
She served as Medical Education Unit (MEU) Coordinator at Kurnool Medical College from July 2017 to November 2020. She currently continues this role at Government Medical College, Anantapuramu, since 25 th March, 2022.She has conducted & completed the medical education training of all the faculty at GMC,Ananthapuramu(120 members since she came in 2022. She has served as Vice-Principal Academic(UG) since 25 th March’2022. As an NMC/MCI Assessor, she has conducted 20 inspections—17 PG (MD Pharmacology) and 3 UG assessments.
She is a well-recognized examiner, paper setter, and thesis evaluator for Dr. NTR UHS, the National Board of Examinations (NBE), RGUHS, KNRUHS, and Dr. MGR University. She has delivered several guest lectures at CMEs, Zonal CMEs of Dr. NTR UHS, CDEs, and at the Academy of Medical Sciences in Kurnool. Notably, she organized and led the 2nd APPS Conference—APPSCON 2020, the first virtual pharmacology conference in Andhra Pradesh, held from December 4 to 6, 2020, at Kurnool Medical College.
From April 5, 2021 to March 24, 2022, she served as the Coordinator of the Medical Device Adverse Event Monitoring Center (MDMC) under the Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI), functioning under the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad.
In recognition of her exceptional service and academic contributions, Dr. Sonia has received multiple Commendation Certificates from her college on the occasions of Republic Day (2009, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2024), Independence Day (2017, 2023), and International Women’s Day (2014). She was also specially commended for her efforts in enhancing PG seat recognition (from 2 to 3) in the department at Kurnool Medical College in 2017 & enhancement of PG seats in Pharmacology from 2 to 7,at GMC, Ananthapuramu.She played a key role in the enhancement & recognition of UG seats(200),PG seats(total 121 now, including 4 MCh Neurosurgery seats) at GMC, Ananthapuramu as MEU Coordinator & Vice-Principal Academic.
